Brown County residents-
A number of Brown County residents have reported a scam circulating our area that is of great concern.
Callers are identifying themselves as AARP representatives informing residents that they are entitled to a free medical alert bracelet. They continue by adding that county residents are also going to be awarded a $3,000 gift card.
Several people have immediately hung up on the callers.. which is a good thing but others have felt since the caller represented AARP that it could be a credible call. On a recent report, a person stated that the caller wanted to obtain personal information before sending out the gift card. The person then hung up.
I have contacted AARP and they have acknowledged they are aware of this activity and stated it is indeed a scam and I then made a complaint to their Fraud Division that this type of activity is in our area.
We are urging county residents to not give out any personal information over the phone. Scammers nowadays are very convincing and with modern technology, calls can appear to come from reputable people but in fact are nothing more than elaborate scams to trick people out of their life savings.
Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.
