The Brown County Sheriffs office would like to inform the public to be aware of children left in vehicles during summer heat. In 2013, 44 children in the United States lost their lives after being left unattended in vehicles and many more were severely injured. This is a 100% preventable tragedy. On a hot day, a childs metabolism heats up 5 times faster than adult. Heatstroke deaths can occur even when outside temperatures are around 80 degrees.
I am asking the public to assist us by being community safety partners and ask that if you should ever see a child alone in a hot vehicle call 911 immediately. If the child is in distress due to heat, get them out as quickly as possible and try to cool them with cool water.
Also please give the same consideration to your pets as they are also succeptable to the heat
